From junk to kids’ play area: Tour of my girl’s secret room!

We have recently moved into a new home. A typical Mumbai apartment amidst a concrete jungle.  Besides the living room, the other two rooms are taken over by adults, which means the kiddo has no place to call her own.  As per Mumbai standards, there’s nothing new in that. But my four year old is used to playing on an open terrace of our previous home. So, how do I turn this house into a ‘home’ that’s inviting and engages my kid,  was the question that I had to find an answer for!

The answer lied in a nook that was full of junk. Looking at this corner, I knew there was a lot that I could do here.  Want some inspiration? Check out our Pinterest board. With ‘space utilisation’ and ‘minimum budget’ on my mind, we started mission ‘Hiya’s play corner.’ The best part about this make-over is that it’s done at a shoe-string budget and in flat 2 days! From re-cycling and re-using to making the best of online deals, I did it all to make it happen.

It started with cleaning. Once, it was all clear, carpenter did the basic shelving job. Two horizontal ply woods and one vertical one and we were done! Now, we needed to camouflage the rough floor with a kid-friendly flooring that’s smooth and bright. Flooring guy came with options and to my surprise, H chose this nice blue one instead her usual choice of pink. The guy did a brilliant job and we were all set.

With the basics in place, now it was my turn! To give the shelves a princess-y effect, H’s Nani (my mom) suggested to utilise the lacy-satiny bed-cover that we hardly used. Some measuring, cutting and sticking and we were ready!

While the top shelves have become home to all our soft toys, the other shelf is home to H’s clothes stacked in big plastic boxes and extra toys. The far corner is our pretend play area. Above our hide-away bed, I added a tap light to brighten-up our reading sessions.

Time to add play-things and H’s fav cartoon characters! The blackboard sticker, Chota Bheem and Owl-y wall decals came from Amazon.

The big window was perfect place to set up H’s study table with ample of natural light coming in. The cloud made from left over flooring and mirchi lights rain add to the drama! Close to the table, we have a board to play with magnetic characters.

Next went a comfy cane chair and a basket full of our fav books in easy reach.

This is our gallery wall. From photos & DIY wall art to H’s drawings clipped on a string…all goes here. That caricature is  done by Denzil Art and the shadowbox with H’s monogram, birth date, hand print and first bootie is made by yours truly.

The final outcome was awesome and H is happily spending time inside her play-area! Mission accomplished!
