Finally, it’s that time of the year when Mumbai will be bedecked in lights, Christmas carols will spread melody, aroma of Christmas cakes will fill the air with happiness. It is also the time when I can get H to play Miss Goody Two Shoes with, ‘Santa Claus will bring you gifts’ bit (Or at least I can try). Yes, Christmas is here, and H is grown up enough to understand that if she does what mumma says, the plump old man called Santa Claus will bring her gifts. I think that’s enough for this year and come next Christmas and we’ll take the next baby step with the story Jesus Christ and other legends associated with the festival.
If you too are trying to warm up for the Christmas season, here are a few Christmas books that we would suggest, while we happily sing Santa Claus is coming to town riding on a sledge…
- The Night Before Christmas by Clement Clarke Moore
We picked this beautiful pop-up book from ‘Books by Kilo’ sale in Mumbai. And we’re glad we did. As the name suggests, the book tells the tale of a home, a night before the Christmas. Stockings are in place, Chrismas tree shining bright and kids tucked in bed are waiting for Santa to come and drop in the gifts. Bright colours and beautiful pop-up pictures catch kids’ attention and the poetic text makes it a musical read. Perfect read to introduce the little ones to Santa.
- The Sweet Smell of Christmas by Patricia M. Scarry
A scratch and sniff picture book, has everything to give your kid a Christmas-y feel. As the Little Bear prepares for holidays, your kid gets a chance to scratch and smell six wonderful scents including apple pie, christmas tree, hot chocolate to name a few. A delectable treat to give young minds a whiff of festivities.
- The Christmas Story by Deborah Hautzig
Ideal for a little grown up kids, it retells the story of the birth of Jesus Christ in Bethlehem.
- Rudolph the Red-nosed Reindeer by Rick Bunsen
When Christmas get cancelled due to snow storm, the red-nosed rein deer comes to rescue of all those who make his fun otherwise. Why? Because he is different. Don’t miss this fun read.
- Dream Snow by Eric Carle
If your kid loves Eric Carle’s The Very Hungry Caterpillar, I’m sure he/she will become a fan of Dream Snow too. A simple story of a farmer who dreams of snow and then goes out to put gifts under his animal’s trees. What more? Your little one would love to press the button under the Christmas tree.
